Former Football Player Joe Sutton Passes Away

PHILADELPHIA – Former Temple halfback Joe “Bud” Sutton passed away on Monday in Bradenton, Fla., at the age of 88.
Born on April 24, 1924, to parents John F. and Josephine Sutton in Philadelphia, Sutton attended Northeast Catholic High School and helped lead the football team to a city championship in 1942.
Upon graduating from high school, Sutton served in the Army in the 131st battalion in World War II. After he returned from service, he attended Temple University where he lettered in football in 1946.
Sutton played defensive back for three seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles from 1950-52, notching 13 interceptions in 30 games. He led the team with eight interceptions in his first year with the club in 1950. Sutton began his NFL career with the Buffalo Bills in 1949.
Sutton was inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 1994.
Sutton is survived by his wife, Patricia, and their three children; son, Jack and daughters, Cheryl Gunning and Nancy Madaffery; nine grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.
There will be a private service in Bradenton, Fla., on Friday with an Army honor guard.
