Men's Crew Opens Season With Three Gold Medals at Stetson Sprints

DeLAND, FL - The Temple men's crew team had a successful opening to the spring portion of is schedule Saturday at the Stetson Sprints Invitational held on Lake Beresford. The Owls Varsity 8, JV8 and Varsity Four all posted wins on the day.

The Varsity 8, comprised of James Barr (stroke), Aaron Heyde (7-seat), Mike Mirabella (6-seat), Brian Reehill (5-seat), Fergal Barry (4-seat), Perry Cox (3-seat), Djordje Vilimanovic (2-seat), Brandon Joyce (bow) and Don Norris (cox), jumped out to the lead on the very first stroke and increased it steadily throughout the 2,000-meter race to defeat Jacksonville by 15 seconds.

The Junior Varsity 8, comprised of Kevin Nally (stroke), Joe Bellesheim (7-seat), John Boehm (6-seat), Mike VanAssche (5-seat), Trey Ehmer (4-seat), Alex Klein (3-seat), Chris Roberts (2-seat), Pat Woodruff (bow) and Matt Sbei (cox), easily bested two Jacksonville crews to win its race.

The Varsity Four, comprised of Nally (stroke), VanAssche (3-seat), Sean McKenna (2-seat), Woodruff (bow) and Nick Palastro (cox), rowed a winning time of 8:04.
