Jason Read Named a 2012 AAU Sullivan Award Finalist

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Temple University women's head rowing coach Jason Read has been named as one of six finalists for the 2012 Annual Sullivan Award.  This is the second time Read has been named a finalist as he achieved this distinction in 2001 following rescue and recovery work at Ground Zero on 9/11 in Manhattan.

The finalists were selected through personal nominations following review by the AAU Sullivan Award Executive Committee. The winner of this year's award will be announced on March 20th at one of the world's most prestigious athletic bastions: the New York Athletic Club. The six finalists include Jillian Camarena, Alex Jupiter, Jason Read, Katherine Reutter, Andrew Rodriguez, and Jordyn Wieber.

“I am extremely proud of the 2011 slate of nominees for the highest honor the AAU bestows—The AAU James E. Sullivan Award,” said Louis Stout, President of the AAU. “These young women and men are the best and the brightest among the hundreds of thousands of amateur athletes who are pursuing their dreams. Not just on the court, the field, the ice, the water or in the gym, these outstanding athletes demonstrate character and leadership in their communities as well. I look forward to meeting them all next week and congratulating them on their achievements.”

“Speechless” said Read quietly when asked how he felt about being named a finalist for a second time.  After reflecting on the good news Read said, “When I look at the long list of athletes who have been selected to this coveted award, I am deeply humbled that the AAU and all those supporters who voted for me believe I am worthy of this distinction.  One year ago this week I was hospitalized with a cardiac arrhythmia; in June I had what a top orthopaedic spine doctor termed a 'career ending' back injury.  Four months later, after fighting relentlessly to get back on the team while overcoming two herniated discs, my teammates selected me to lead the Pan American team into a packed stadium during Opening Ceremonies in Guadalajara, Mexico.  I am really looking forward to meeting the other finalists at the NYAC on Tuesday.”

Previous notable recipients of the AAU Sullivan Award include: Mark Spitz, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Florence Joyner, Peyton Manning, Michelle Kwan, Sarah Hughes, Michael Phelps, J.J. Redick, Tim Tebow and Shawn Johnson.
