Volleyball Wraps up Successful Spring With Invitational Win on Alumni Weekend

PHILADELPHIA - An already strong spring season ended on yet another high note for Temple volleyball, as the Owls won their own Invitational at McGonigle Hall on April 21 as part of Alumni Weekend. Temple defeated Holy Family (2-0), the Temple Alumni team (2-0) and split with Army (1-1). Other participating teams were Georgian Court, Iona and Delaware State.

Prior to the start of the tournament, Special Assistant to the AD Al Shrier along with head coach Bakeer Ganes presented an award to Alma Kovaci. Inducted into the Temple Athletics Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2011, Kovaci is now the head coach at Army.

The weekend marked the first time a team of Temple alums came back to compete as a team in the tournament.

"The Alumni Weekend was a big success," said Ganes. "The alums were from different decades, which was really nice. It was great to see our current players mingle with the alumni and exchange experiences. We're looking forward to making this event even bigger and better for next year."

Ganes is very pleased with how his team competed throughout the spring season, which included 2-0 wins vs. Penn, Bucknell and La Salle.

"It was great that we finished the spring by winning our Invitational and ending the season on a very positive note," he said. "The spring went very well and it was good to see the improvement on the court and how we implemented the different aspects of the game that we worked on in practice. I'm very positive and excited about the upcoming season. I think we have a good core group of kids and we're looking forward to integrating the new ones. I think we'll have a very strong squad for 2012."
