No. 10 Men's Gymnastics Takes ECAC Crown With Highest Earned Score In Program History

Owls totaled a score of 349.400 to win first conference title since 2008

PHILADELPHIA—Hosting the 2012 ECAC Championships in the confines of McGonigle Hall, the No. 10 Temple Owls put forth arguably their most impressive performance in school history, as they set a new school record with its team score of 347.400 to win the conference title, earning them a berth in the NCAA Championships in Oklahoma on April 20. Senior Chris Mooney was the runner-up for the individual all-around title with his season-best score of 85.300.
Springfield placed second with a score of 332.600, ahead of Illinois-Chicago (332.300) who won the conference championship in each of the previous three seasons. William & Mary earned a fourth place score of 330.400 to beat out Navy (330.400) and Army (325.700).
Navy's Andrew Faulk was crowned the all-around conference champion with his first place score of 86.000, which beat out Mooney. Senior Adam Al-Rokh also was a major contributor in Temple's highest scoring meet in school history with his fourth place score through the four events he worked, compiling a score of 83.000.
With the victory, the Owls own a record of 22-2 and go undefeated in meets against ECAC opponents this season.
The Owls started the road to the championship on floors. Coming into the meet, Temple led the ECAC with an average score of 337.622, which was more than nine points higher than defending ECAC champ UIC, who was ranked second.
Like every event, 36-year head coach Fred Turoff's Owls owned the top average score on floor exercise.
Ranked second in the league with his floor routine average score, senior Allan Malone placed first overall in the event on Friday with earned total of 15.000, just beating out his teammate John Leonard (15.100) who was ranked just below him in third place overall on the year.
Leonard and Malone will both move on to Saturday's individual finals and will join Jeff Zach, who was given a score of 14.500.
Senior Michael Bittner, junior Alex Tighe and Al-Rokh, as those three placed within the top 10 in the pommel horse event, earning themselves a spot in final on Saturday.
Bittner led the Owls with a score of 14.500 on the apparatus. Al-Rokh got his night in the all-around completion underway with his score of 14.200, while Tighe placed in between them, earning a score of 14.300.
On rings, Al-Rokh took the event title with his season-high score of 15.100 to earn a spot in Saturday's event final, where he'll be joined by senior Taylor Brana (14.900) who is ranked second in the conference on the apparatus. Mooney (14.800) will also compete in the event individual final.
Springfield's Chris Jost was awarded the title for the vault event, but senior Matt Martin was a close second place scorer, tying with Springfield's Ty Evans with like score of 14.900.
Mooney and junior Brett Statman assured themselves a slot in the event final on Saturday with their identical scores of 14.600 on the vault.
The conference's second-best performer on parallel bars, senior Taylor Brana earned the title in the conference championship. Brana was garnered a score of 14.500, while Tighe was shown a score of 14.400 for his performance—earning him a spot the event final. Brendan Williams put up a very solid 14.000 mark to also make it to Saturday.

The ECAC Championships pick up at 2:00 p.m. in McGonigle Hall on Saturday when the Individual Event Finals will take place. Once again, live video streaming will be available.
