Men's Gymnastics Places Second In National Academic Team Rankings With 15 Scholar-Athletes

PHILADELPHIA—For the third straight year, Temple Men's Gymnastics has placed in the top two for highest grade point average among all men's gymnastics programs in the nation. The Owls, who are the 2011 defending National Academic Team Champions, placed as the runner-up in the 2011-12 academic year with an outstanding GPA of 3.479. Only ECAC-rival William & Mary had a higher average, as the Tribe put together a 3.530 team GPA, helping it earn its fifth national academic team title since the inception of the award in 1991. In the same release, Chris Mooney and Blake Collins were among six gymnasts in the nation to be designated Scholar Athletes based on all four years of eligibility. Thirteen other Temple gymnasts were also named Scholar Athletes by the College Gymnastics Association.

In addition to Mooney and Collins chosen as Scholar Athletes for this year, Brett Statman, Alex Tighe, Zachery Aguiar, Assaf Zoor, Jeff Zack, Matt Martin, Evan Burke, Adam Al-Rokh and Taylor Brana were also named to the 73-member first team.
Scott Haddaway, Michael Bittner, Dashiell Sears and John Leonard also received recognition for their efforts in the classroom, as they were named second team all-American Scholar Athletes, which consisted of 52 gymnasts throughout the nation.
Following a No. 10 ranking in the NCAA last season and an ECAC Championship, the Owls have been cited for their academic efforts multiple times. In April, the team won The Owl Trophy for the top Team GPA Award with for the highest aggregate grade point average before most recently being recognized by the NCAA for their Academic Performance Rate.
