NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Temple's Alyssa Delp
was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Field Hockey Rookie of the Week, while VCU's Kelsey Scherrer earned Player of the Week honors, as announced by the league Monday for games played Sept. 10-16.
Delp, a freshman forward, earned Rookie of the Week accolades after posting a total of eight points against both Delaware and No. 15 Drexel. The Owls finished 1-1, falling to Delaware, 4-3, but rebounded to defeat No. 15 Drexel, 5-1. The Fleetwood, Pa., native scored two goals in each contest, leading the Owls this past week. One of Delp's goals against Drexel would prove to be the game-winner, as the Owls earned their first win over Drexel since 2007 and got their first win vs. a ranked opponent since defeating No. 10 Massachusetts in 2009.
Scherrer, a senior forward, earned Player of the Week honors after contributing to the Rams' wins against Davidson, 2-0, and Appalachian State, 4-3. The Chesapeake, Va., native scored one goal against Davidson, and tallied one goal and one assist against Appalachian State. After Scherrer's five points this past week, she became the first Ram in school history to reach 100 career points.
