Jurewicz Scores First Career Goal In Dramatic Fashion; Women's Soccer Defeats Marist, 1-0, In Overtime Thriller
9.23.12 | Women's Soccer
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Freshman Paula Jurewicz could not have picked a better time to net the first goal of her Temple career. On Sunday against Marist, the Owls and Red Foxes fought through 96 minutes of scoreless action until Jurewicz buried a shot in the lower left corner of the net to give the Owls the 1-0 win over the Red Foxes at Tenney Stadium.
“I'm really proud of the group,” head coach Matt Gwilliam said. “We made some changes and everyone stepped up, stuck to the plan and we defended well. Even with missing some of our chances, we really did some things that tested their [Marist's] goalkeeper and the ladies still stuck with it. Paula's finish on the goal was great. We got a great effort out of everyone from this program today and we're very excited about getting a big win before going into conference play.”
Entering the match, the Owls rolled into Poughkeepsie, N.Y. coming off five straight games in which one or no goals were scored between them and their opponent. Sunday's match with Marist proved to be just as frugal, but this time, Temple was on the fortunate side, as it found a way to net the game's only goal, which would give it is first road win since last year's season-opener at Iona (Aug. 20, 2011).
Maintaining its consistency, the Owls got another stellar effort out of its defensive unit, which fronted the pressure for redshirt senior goalkeeper Tara Murphy, who was making her first start since Sept. 2 at Penn. Of the 26 shots Marist took, the Owls got in the way of several and caused many to go off line, as only eight were directed on goal, which were all stopped by Murphy, who posted her second shutout victory of the season.
Over the last six games, the Owls defense has allowed just three goals and is posing a microscopic goals against average of 0.48 in that span.
Temple was held to 10 shots for the game, but had a lot of precision behind them, as seven were directed in the way of Marist goalkeeper Caitlin Landsman, who stopped six of them.
The clean sheet pitched by the Owls is the team's fourth of the year, which puts them just one short of last season's total with eight games yet to be played.
From the 70th through 79th minute, the Owls began finding their way through the Marist defesne. During that time span, they put up their strongest threat of the match, as seniors Kate Yurkovic, Casey Greco, Jourdan Brill and junior Karly O'Toole all presented chances, but were all denied.
With the victory, the Owls improved to 3-6-2 on the year before opening their final Atlantic 10 Conference slate next Saturday when they welcome the Saint Joseph's Hawks to the Ambler Sports Complex for a 1:00 p.m. match.
Temple's win by a count of 1-0 is the sixth straight time that the Owls have won a game by that score. It is also the ninth straight game that either Temple or its opponent has come away with a shutout.
