AMBLER—Getting the nod to make her first collegiate start on Friday afternoon, freshman goalkeeper Shauni Kerkhoff made the most of her opportunity, as she turned away all six shots Iona College (1-3-1) kicked  her way to help the Owls use senior Morgyn Seigfried's 19th minute goal as the clincher for the team's second victory of the season. With the 1-0 win, Temple Women's Soccer (2-3-1) has now posted five straight shutouts in home matches, dating back to Oct. 9, 2011, turning the Ambler Sports Complex into the team's safeguard. The five consecutive clean sheets is the most the program has posted in a row since moving its home to Ambler, Pa.

Seigfried put the Owls in position to win their second straight home game to begin the season, when she crossed from the left side of the box to field a pass in the middle from freshman Paula Jurewicz. Taking the feed, Seigfried blasted the ball behind Iona 'keeper Trista Rivera for her first tally of the season and first since Aug. 26, 2011.

On the goal, Jurewicz inked her name on the stat sheet for the first time in her Temple career, getting credit for the assist.

The talk of the shutout streak is not limited to just playing in Ambler. With Friday's victory, Temple is now 3-0-0 in head-to-head matches against Iona. Through those three games, the Owls have never allowed a goal to the Gaels. In the the first-ever meeting between the two schools, the Owls won by a score of 2-0 back in 2003 and it was once again Temple who came away with a 1-0 win in last year's season-opener in New Rochelle, N.Y.

With Kerkhoff starting in net, head coach Matt Gwilliam gave time to 10 of the 15 freshmen that make up the largest freshman class on a team in Division I women's soccer, making it the youngest lineup he has used in a game this season.

As it has done so well in the onset of matches this season, the Owls presented finesse and controlled the ball well for the opening minutes. Between the 7th and 8th minute, senior Casey Greco and junior Karly O'Toole had scoring chances for the Owls. Greco's shot was blocked before O'Toole's shot from the outside right corner of the box was drilled in line at the net, but wisped over the top of the cross bar.

Iona's physicality and ability to move the ball well is helped the Gaels keep pace with the Owls and make Friday's game such an evenly-matched contest.

Though Temple won the battle in the shots category by a narrow, 11-9 margin, six of Iona's nine total shots found the area Kerkhoff was guarding.

For the Gaels, Sofia Sanchez had a game-high two shots on net, making her the one that caused the Owls' defense its most trouble. With Kerkhoff's stellar performance, she was not fazed, keeping her and the Gaels from tying the match.
Iona's closest chance to knotting the game happened in the 58th minute when Taylor Boughner fired a shot from the top of the box that rammed into the cross bar before ricocheting out of play.

O'Toole led TU with three shots and all seven shots on goal that the team mustered were off the foot of a different player.

Winners of two of their last three games, Temple hits the road on Sunday to make its way to Roberts Stadium for a match against Princeton, which is set for a Noon time kickoff.
