SPRINGFIELD, Mass.— No. 13 Temple Men's Gymnastics worked on the areas it was not satisfied with in last week's season opener and it showed on Sunday afternoon. The Owls, who went to Springfield College for a head-to-head meet, defeated their ECAC rivals, 408.750-398.300, and had gymnasts win event titles in five of the six events.

Standing out for the Owls on this day was senior Allan Malone, who toppled all six-event participants with his first place score of 81.050 in the all-around. Freshman Jon Rydzefski, who had an impressive debut a week ago at the Navy Open, also turned in a solid figure in the all-around, as he earned a score of 77.850 for third place.

Fifth-year gymnast and captain Evan Burke had a strong day for the Owls, as he claimed titles on vault and on the mat in the floor exercise. Burke's co-captain Taylor Brana earned a score of 14.350 on parallel bars to take the event title on that apparatus, while sophomore Michael Bittner led all gymnasts on pommel horse with his score of 14.300 and senior Alex Tighe captured the individual title on the high bar with his earned score of 14.750.

Burke's tally of 14.900 for his performance on vault was just ahead of junior John Leonard's score of 14.200, which made him the runner-up to his teammate.

On the floor, the Owls had several gymnasts demonstrate solid routines, as three others joined Burke in the top five. Leonard took a third place score in the event with his mark of 13.900, while junior Brendan Williams (13.700) and freshman Blaise Cosenza (13.650) came fourth and fifth, respectively.

All-around champion Malone had his best finishes in both bar events, taking the runner-up position in both events. On parallel bars, he placed just behind Brana  with a 13.650 and ranked second to Tighe on horizontal bars with a 14.150.

Along with his pommel title, Bittner also gave an exceptionally well performance on parallel bars, as he earned a third-place score of 13.350.

The still rings title was the only event a Temple gymnast could not conquer; however, senior Assaf Zoor put up an impressive performance, earning a second place score of 13.950, making him the runner-up to Springfield's Ryan Ponce, who was tabbed with a 15.350 after proving his dominance in the routine.

As a whole, the Owls' lineup on still rings proved to be their most consistent, as all six Temple performers placed within the top 10.

Behind Zoor, freshman Evan Eigner turned in TU's second-best score and finished third overall with a 13.900, while Brana (13.700) took fourth, Dashiell Sears (13.500) claimed sixth, Malone (13.250) captured eighth and Rydzefski (12.950) followed with a 10th place tie.

Temple moves back to the .500 mark and is now 3-3 through its first two meets in 2013. The Owls will now train for next week's two-day meet when they compete in the West Point Open. Team events and the all-around will take place on Friday night beginning at 7:00 p.m.

Friday's event finalists will move on to Saturday night's competition, which will also begin at 7:00 p.m.
