Women's Soccer Falls to Cincinnati 2-1 on Senior Day

10.20.13 | Women's Soccer

AMBLER, Pa. – Temple women's soccer dropped Senior Day and their annual breast cancer awareness game against Cincinnati 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at Ambler Sports Complex.  The loss drops the Owls' record to 6-8-1, 1-6-0.

"It was a very tough competitive game," head coach Seamus O'Connor said. "We tried to play them straight up and have no regrets.  Each week the girls have been able to raise their speed up against the opposition.  We've shown that we're getting closer and closer to getting another win in this conference."

The first half was scoreless.  Cincinnati had possession for most of the half, but the Owls didn't let them have any good scoring chances as both teams finished with three shots.

The Bearcats were able to take control starting in the second half.  They controlled possession of the ball and limited the Owls from clearing the ball from their own zone.  They capitalized in the 60th minute.  Mackenzie Reynolds placed a shot on Shauni Kerkhoff, and Kerkhoff made the save.  Emily Elsbrock gathered the rebound and scored from five yards away.

Cincinnati added another goal in the 77th minute.  After the ball bounced around after a cross, Katy Couperus gathered the ball and scored from 10 yards away.

The Owls responded late in the game.  Taylor Trusky kicked the ball in towards the box where Alyssa Kirk got control and booted it past the goalie.  The goal with 1:37 remaining in the game was Kirk's third of the year.

Temple was able to get the ball near Cincinnati's goal with less than 30 seconds left, but the Bearcats were able to successfully clear the ball out of their zone.

Goalie Shauni Kerkhoff recorded eight saves in the game for the Owls.

Up next for Temple is a road game against Memphis next Thursday at 7:00 p.m.  The Tigers are 9-7-0, 2-5-0 and currently have a two game-losing streak.
