MEMPHIS (11/30/13) — On a sunny day in the home of the Blues, the Cherry and White were the story as they sent the senior class out on a high note with a 41-21 win over the Memphis Tigers. The win marks the first victory in the American Athletic Conference for the Owls.

QB P.J. Walker finished his phenomenal freshman campaign going 20-32 for 328 yards including 4 TD's. With his 328 passing yards, Walker tied Henry Burris ('96) for 4th highest single season passing totals with 2,084 yards. He also rushed for 59 yards on 11 carries.

Sophomore RB Jamie Gilmore had a career day rushing 16 times for 92 yards, all career highs, including a career long run of 28 yards. In his final game donning the Temple "T", senior TE Chris Coyer had career highs across the board as well finishing with 3 catches for 129 yards and 1 TD.

Temple was on the board first as they marched 98 yards in 12 plays on their second offensive drive. Aggressive running dominated the play calling, as Jamie Gilmore had consecutive rushes of 21 and 28 yards. Gilmore rushed four times for 62 yards on the drive. The Owls had a first-and-goal on the Memphis 6, but after one rush and two incomplete passes had to settle for a 22-yard Nick Visco field goal.

Following two Memphis' three and outs, the Tigers began driving, highlighted by a 28-yard pass from QB Paxton Lynch to Alan Cross. Three plays later, LB Tyler Matakevich punched the ball out of Memphis' RB Doroland Dorceus grasp, which allowed DL Shabaz Ahmed to recover the fumble for the Owls.

Temple's offense took over at the Memphis 18-yard line. In contrast with the Owl's first scoring drive where running dominated the play calling, P.J. Walker showed his strong arm, completing passes of 13, 9 and 4 yards, respectively. The drive was highlighted by a 44-yard strike to Coyer.

TU was then stopped for three straight downs, but continued its aggressive play calling, going for it on 4th-and 1. Junior RB Kenneth Harper converted on 4th down with a two-yard carry, and a facemask penalty was added onto it to make it 1st and goal from the 1-yard line.

On 2nd and goal, Walker hooked up with sophomore WR Robby Anderson on a fade route to the back of the endzone for a Temple touchdown. With that catch Anderson recorded his fifth straight game with a touchdown catch. It was also his seventh TD grab of the season, which put the Owls up 10-0.

Memphis took the ensuing kickoff back 56 yards to the Temple 30-yard line and only need three plays to cross the goal line. On the second play of the drive Lynch hooked up with WR Keiwone Malone for 27 yards placing the ball at the TU 1-yard line. On the very next play, RB Sam Craft, took the handoff on the left side and walked in for a 1-yard score.

The Owls were driving following the Memphis touchdown, but the drive was halted after Walker scrambled out of the pocket on 3rd and 19 and forced a throw towards the Temple sideline that was intercepted by CB Chris Morely.

The Temple defense stood tall against the Tigers following the turnover and forced another punt.

With 1:18 left in the first half, Walker showed his dual-threat ability, dashing off for a career long run of 40 yards. Three plays later Walker connected with a familiar name in Robby Anderson for the score. Anderson's eighth receiving touchdown of the season put the Owls up 17-7 at the half.

By halftime, Temple had amassed 310 total yards compared to Memphis' 74. The Owls were 3-3 in the redzone, and 3-4 on fourth down conversions. They also won the time of possession battle having the ball in their control for over 21 minutes, compared to the Tigers 8 minutes 32 seconds.

Both offenses were stopped on their first drives out of the half, but a 41-yard punt by Memphis' Tom Horsey pinned the Owls at their own 1-yard line. Temple could not get anything going offensively and was forced to punt.

Keiwone Malone called for a fair catch at the 40-yard line, but was hit after the play. The ball was then placed at the TU 25 in result of the penalty.

The Tigers only needed 4 plays to capitalize on the Temple miscue. Lynch connected with WR Sam Craft for a 10-yard score. The score brought the Tigers within three, Temple 17, Memphis 14.

Temple responded, with Walker wasting no time on offense, following a touchback on the kickoff, as he hooked up with Coyer for a career long, 75-yard TD pass, that also put him over the 100-yard plateau for the first time in the converted QB's career.

With all cylinders clicking for the Owls, it was the special teams turn to step up and make a play. Not to be outshined by the offense or defense, Sharif Finch blocked a Tom Hornsey punt at the 10-yard line and after a scrum in the endzone; Michael Felton fell on the ball for a TU TD, stretching the Owls lead to 14.

Memphis responded with a 12-play 62-yard drive ending in a Sam Craft 3-yard touchdown run. The drive was made possible by an 8-yard pass from Lynch to Craft on 4th and 4 at the Temple 33-yard line. Craft scooted in after a pass interference call on Temple on third down gave Memphis a fresh set of downs at the 3-yard line.

After a Jake Elliot 47-yard field goal went wide left, Temple marched down the field for a 9 play 69 yard scoring drive, capped off by a 19-yard Nick Visco field goal.

Prior to the kick, Robby Anderson caught a 44-yard pass from Walker to keep the drive alive on 3rd and 4. Alderman followed Anderson's catch with a 16-yard reception to give the Owls a 1st and goal from the 5-yard line.

Memphis got the ball back down 13 and was driving until a 4th and inches stop by Hershey Walton, got the Owls got the ball at their own 43-yard line.

Walker orchestrated a seven play 56-yard TD drive, converting on two 3rd down throws to move the chains for the Owls. The drive concluded with a 21-yard scoring pass to Robby Anderson, which was the third of the game for him and his first career three TD game. Anderson finished the day with 7 catches for 96 yards and 3 TDs.

The score stretched the Owls lead to 20 points, and sealed the game for Temple, as Memphis' final drive was unsuccessful, and the Owls took over on downs and ran out the clock.
