Volleyball Outlasts Memphis on the Road, 3-1

11.8.13 | Women's Volleyball

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Many strong performances led to a four-set win for Temple volleyball on the road at Memphis, as the Owls (17-7, 8-4) defeated the Tigers (12-14, 4-8) by scores of 25-18, 25-21, 20-25 and 25-21. Freshman Caroline Grattan and senior Elyse Burkert led Temple with 15 and 14 kills, respectively, while sophomore libero Alyssa Drachslin recorded a match-best 26 digs.

Jennifer Iacobini, who has been Temple's most efficient hitter all season, displayed that yet again with 11 kills and only a single error for a percentage of .417.

Burkert added 11 digs to her 14 kills for a double-double, while Sandra Sydlik also notched a double-double with 12 digs to go with 49 assists. Gabriella Matautia added 18 digs to eight kills, and Kirsten Overton recorded a team-best four blocks to go with seven kills.

Temple had a very strong first set, knocking down 20 kills with just three errors and out-hitting Memphis .426 to .200. Burkert recorded seven kills in the first set alone, twice recording kills for three consecutive Temple points. The second time came at the end of the set as Burkert got a kill for points 23, 24 and 25.

The second set was closer early on, but after the seventh tie at 16-16, the Owls pulled away and won 25-21. Hitting errors plagued Temple in the third set, allowing Memphis to make a bit of a run halfway through and hold on for a 25-20 win.

Overton helped break a 17-17 tie in the fourth set with back-to-back kills, and Iacobini soon followed with a block and a kill to put the Owls ahead 21-20.

Next up with two straight points was Grattan with kills for points 22 and 23. After an attack error on Memphis gave the Owls set and match point, Overton and Grattan went up for a block and got it down to cap a 5-1 run and end the match in Temple's favor.

Next weekend the Owls will travel to SMU and Houston for the second and third of five straight road matches.
