MISSOULA, Mont.  – Temple women's basketball won its third straight road game with a 61-52 victory at Montana on Saturday night at Dahlberg Arena.  The Owls' win snapped the Lady Griz's 10-game home winning streak.
Temple improved to 5-2 overall, while Montana fell to 6-2.
In the first half, TU scored the first bucket, but Montana opened with an 8-0 run.  The Lady Griz went ahead by as many as seven points, 15-8, before Temple came back.  The Owls had a 6-0 run and came with one, 19-18, on a three-pointer by junior Rateska Brown (Alvin, S.C.).  Junior Tyonna Williams (Fort Washington, Md.) tied the game at 19-19 with a free throw. The Owls held a one-point edge at haltime, 27-26.
"I'm not one for making excuses, but it's a long trip out here and with the altitude, our players were really tired," said sixth-year head coach Tonya Cardoza.  "In the first half, we missed shots we normally make.  We talked about it at halftime."
The Lady Griz tied the game with the opening bucket of the second half, but never led again. TU went on a 9-1 run in the opening minutes.  The Owls pushed their lead to as many as 12 points, 46-34, with 11:35 to go.
Senior Shi-Heria Shipp (Salisbury, N.C.) paced the Owls with a double-double of 17 points and 16 rebounds. Freshman point guard Feyonda Fitzgerald (Norfolk, Va.) followed with 13 points, while senior Natasha Thames' (Port Huron, Mich.) added nine points. Brown finished with eight points.
Overall, Temple out-rebounded Montana, 52-38. The Owls went 15-of-20 from the line (.750), while UM went 6-of-8 (.750).
"We made a concerted effort to attack the boards," Cardoza said. "But Montana did a good job, too. We definitely wanted to focus on second opportunities."
Temple continues its road trip with a stop at No. 25 Syracuse on Monday, Dec. 16. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at the Carrier Dome.
