PHILADELPHIA - By allowing just two Saint Joseph's field goals in the final four minutes, Temple men's basketball held its lead and extended it, winning the Big 5 contest by a score of 77-69 on Wednesday night. The Owls (4-3, 2-0 Big 5) had four players score in double figures, led by Will Cummings and Dalton Pepper with 16 points and Anthony Lee with a double-double of 15 points to go with 11 rebounds.
Langston Galloway put up a game-high 24 points for the Hawks (4-3, 0-1 Big 5), and three others also scored in double figures for Saint Joseph's.
Quenton DeCosey was Temple's fourth player with double figures in scoring, finishing with 10 points off the bench. Along with his 16 points, Cummings added seven assists to tie his career high. Mark Williams scored seven points to go with seven rebounds for Temple.
The Owls took a lead with 11:52 remaining on a falling down jumper by Josh Brown and never relinquished it, in a game that had seen 13 ties prior to that point. There was one more tie down the stretch at 65-65 with 4:27 remaining, after Galloway capped his own five-point run with his sixth three-pointer of the game.
Lee scored seven of the Owls' final 12 points to close out the game, and Temple hit 7-of-8 from the free throw line in the final 28 seconds to seal the win.
After a low-scoring beginning that saw the score tied at 2-2 after four minutes, the pace began to pick up for the rest of the half. After falling behind 7-2, the Owls used a 9-2 run to take their first lead of the contest, 11-9 at 12:21.
Near the midway point of the half, Williams scored seven straight points for Temple, but then picked up his second foul of the game. The Owls were in the lead more frequently than not, but it was a tight half that saw 11 total ties.
After the final tie of the half at 34-34 with 1:07 remaining, the Owls closed on a 5-0 run to lead 39-34 at the break. Pepper hit a three-pointer just under the one-minute mark, and soon got a defensive rebound that led to the final Temple bucket by DeCosey.
Temple's five-point halftime lead was short-lived in the second, as Saint Joseph's tied the game at 41 less than two minutes in.
The Owls were out-rebounded 45-37 in the game, but forced 15 Hawk turnovers while committing just nine.
