Tighe To Compete In Winter Cup Challenge Finals Saturday Night

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – As Temple's lone representative at the Winter Cup Challenge, an annual event held by USA Gymnastics in Las Vegas, senior Alex Tighe placed 33rd overall in preliminary competition on Thursday, qualifying him for the finals on Saturday night (10:15 p.m.) at the LV Sports Center.
Working three events in the preliminary session, Tighe, who shares this week's ECAC Gymnast of the Week honor, competed on pommel horse, parallel bars and on the horizontal bar.
Pommel horse proved to be his specialty, as he impressed many by earning a sixth place score of 13.6. Tighe also had a sensational demonstration on the high bar, allowing him to earn a ninth-place score of 13.850.
Along with his two top 10 scores, he also competed on parallel bars, where he was given a point value of 11.850 to take 30th place on the apparatus.
Tighe, a qualifier for last year's Visa Championships, totaled a score of 39.300 through the three events, proving to be enough to place inside the top 42, which is required to advance to the finals.
