Three Gymnasts Recognized On ECAC Weekly Honor Roll

PHILADELPHIA— On the final Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference men's gymnastics weekly honor, a pair of Temple gymnasts were recognized for their efforts that led the Owls to their Homecoming win over Army and Navy last Saturday. Senior Alex Tighe has been named the conference;s Gymnast of the Week, while freshman Jon Rydzefski was tabbed the ECAC's Rookie of the Week.
Tighe paced the Owls (415.35) in the their Homecoming win over Army(403.80) and Navy (405.00) in McGonigle Hall. He set a Temple record on horizontal bar(15.2) to capture first place along with his performances on pommel horse (14.1/2nd) and parallel bars (13.9/3rd). In 2012 Alex was a first team College Gymnastics Association Academic All-America Scholar Athlete and won the ECAC conference title on parallel bars (14.7). He also captured the ECAC horizontal bar title (14.1) as a sophomore and has twice been an NCAA qualifier. He also competed at the 2012 VISA U.S. Gymnastics Championships in San Jose, Calif. He, along with Garrek Hojan-Clark(Army), have been selected by the NCAA coaches as candidates for the prestigious Nissen-Emery Award presented at the NCAA Championship to the nation's outstanding collegiate gymnast. Tighe, who is from Brookfield,Wis. received his early training under Stacy Maloney, Andrei Khan and Alex Beinovski at the Swiss Turners.
Rydzefski, a native of Leominster, Mass. posted his highest all-around score (82.75) of the season to capture first place and help the Owls in their homecoming win over Army and Navy. Rydzefski was a four-time Junior Olympic National qualifier throughout high school and at this time an undeclared major. He received his early training at Sterling Gymnastics under former UMasss gymnast Bob Donahue.
Rydzefski's Rookie of the Week honor is the second straight week a TU gymnast was tabbed with the award.
A week ago during the Owls' spring break tour, freshman Evan Eigner posted a 14.25 score to tie teammate Taylor Brana for first place on rings in the Owls losing effort to Illinois - Chicago. A native of Philadelphia majoring in Sports management, he received his early training at the Cherry Hill Gymnastics Academy under former Owl Rich Tobin. Later he moved his training to Philadelphia Boys' Gymnastics where he trained under Fred Turoff and Theo Maes and was a four time Junior Olympic qualifier
