SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Temple men's gymnastics team will travel to Springfield College this weekend to defend its ECAC Championship title beginning on Friday, April 5. As last year's champions, the Owls are vying for their second consecutive conference title this weekend, as they'll go up against host Springfield, William & Mary, Navy, Army and Illinois-Chicago . The team and individual all-around competition will get underway at 7 p.m. this Friday, followed by the individual event finals on Saturday at 6 p.m.
Coming off a strong win against two conference rivals, Army and Navy, the team nabbed three conference weekly honors from senior Alex Tighe and freshmen Jon Rydzefski and Evan Eigner from their showings at home and during their spring break tour.
Current rankings place the Owls just behind William & Mary in the conference. However, a solid showing from Temple all-arounders Allan Malone and Rydzefski, as well as Tighe, Evan Burke, and Taylor Brana, will put the Owls in strong contention for the championship title.
The event specialists of Temple's team have all posted strong scores this season that will be key performances to the Owls competition next weekend. Alex Tighe, a strong high bar worker, is coming off a school record-breaking performance this past weekend and is a previous ECAC high bar champion. Rings specialists Dash Sears and Evan Eigner have both posted strong scores on the event and will hope to keep the ball rolling for both the team and event finals.
Senior Brett Statman, who has barred a back injury that caused him to miss many of the Owls meets earlier in the season, has been back in the lineups since the Owls competitions during spring break. His performances, notably a season high of 14.55 on the floor and 14.5 on the vault, will be two more strong scores to watch for.
