PHILADELPHIA – Senior Alex Tighe (Brookfield, Wis.) of the Temple men's gymnastics team has been named to the Philadelphia Inquirer Men's At-Large Academic All-Area Team. Tighe is one of 10 student-athletes recognized for their work in competition and in the classroom this season. Penn's Whit Shaw (sprint football) was named the Academic All-Area Performer of the Year. The list of the entire team can be viewed by clicking the link above.

Tighe, an Applied Mathematics major with a grade point average of 3.92, works pommel horse, parallel bars and the horizontal bar for the 2013 Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Champion Temple Owls, who are nationally ranked (#13) and will head to Penn State to compete for the NCAA Championship this weekend.

The fourth-year gymnast worked all three of his trained events to help pace Temple to its first West Point Open title since 1995, leading him the ECAC Gymnast of the Week honors (Feb. 4).

A week later, Tighe competed in three events at the 2013 Winter Cup Challenge, which features the top competitors in the nation, and qualified for the  event finals at the meet held by USA Gymnastics.

The 2011 ECAC champion on horizontal bar (2011) and 2012 title winner on parallel bars was recognized as a first team Academic All-American Scholar Athlete for 2012 by the College Gymnastics Association (CGA).
