Tighe Qualifies For NCAA Event Finals; Temple Finishes Season Ranked No. 12

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – Senior Alex Tighe is moving on to the Event Finals of the NCAA Championship and will have a chance to earn All-American status on Sunday afternoon when competition opens at 2:00 p.m.. In Friday evening's NCAA National Qualifier, Temple placed sixth in the second session with a score of 407.800 to maintain 12th place in the national rankings.
Top-seed and host Penn State won the session with a 436.900. Stanford (435.850) and Iowa (426.550) will join the Nittany Lions in the Team Finals on Saturday, where they will compete against Michigan, Oklahoma and Illinois, who were the Top 3 finalists in the first session of the National Qualifier.
Tighe, who is the ECAC Senior Athlete of the Year and was honored by the NCAA on Thursday evening for being selected as a Nissen-Emery Finalist, will compete in the parallel bars and horizontal bar event finals. The fourth-year gymnast tied for 10th on both bar events, having a 14.5 on parallel bars and a 14.2 score on the horizontal bar. Tighe also participated on pommel horse, where he turned in TU's second-best score (13.7), which was only behind graduate student Taylor Brana , who came away with a 14.0. Brana, the Owls' other team captain, finished second among Temple competitors on rings (14.050) and on parallel bars (14.250).
Graduate student Evan Burke nearly joined Tighe in the Event Finals with his second-highest vault score of the season (14.7) but was outdone by Ohio State's Jeff Treleaven, Springfield's Christ Jost and Cal's Steven Lacombe. Earlier in the meet, the Owls' team captain led the squad with a 14.4 clip
Senior Dashiell Sears came away as the Owls' leader on rings with his earned score o 14.450.
Competing in six events, freshman Jon Rydzefski turned in a 78.3 combined score in the all-around, while senior Allan Malone totaled 77.600.
Junior John Leonard supported the Owls with scores that were strong enough for second place on the team in the floor exercise (14.150) and third on vault (14.250). Freshman Phillip Pruett totaled a 14.350 for his routine on vault to take second place on the team.
In their only events on the night, senior Assaf Zoor recorded a 13.850 on rings, which was ahead of freshman Evan Eigner (13.750). Freshman Blaise Cosenza ended his season with a score of 12.950 in the floor exercise. Brendan Williams contributed to the team's pommel total (66.750) with a 12.650, which was his lone event on the night, while senior Brett Statman had his highest score of the competition on floor (13.750)
While the season ends No. 12 Temple, Tighe will prepare for Sunday when he competes for a national title in both bar events beginning at 2:00 p.m..
Note: On Thursday evening, 37-year head coach Fred Turoff (left) and his second-year assistant Patrick McLaughlin (right) were named the NCAA East Region Head Coach and Assistant Coach of the Year, respecitvely, for a consecutive year. Turoff and McLaughlin have now been recognized as a duo three times, as they are also the 2013 ECAC Head and Assistant Coaches of the Year. As mentioned above, Tighe (middle) was recognized for being a nominee for the Nissen-Emery Award, which is the award given to the nation's top gymnast.
