RICHMOND, Va. –
In the final game of its weekend set against the Richmond Spiders, Temple was dealt a devastating 4-3 loss in extra innings on a ball hit by Joey Vecchione with the bases loaded in the 10th inning.. The Owls trailed by three runs after the first inning, but crawled back and evened the game in the fourth when it got its second run-through against pitcher Jacob Mayers. Temple's pitching staff held 19 Richmond runners on base and to zero runs for eight-straight innings.
Battling back from a 3-0 hole, senior Allen Stiles
got the comeback going in the fourth inning when he led off the frame with a double into right center. The rally began to really take shape when freshman Jimmy Kerrigan
got on base, courtesy of a mishandled ball by the Richmond shortstop, which forced Stiles to third. Temple's first run came on the next pitch when Mayers was called for a balk. After another double in the inning by senior Henry Knabe
, the Owls got back-to-back sacrifice hits from junior Derek Peterson
and sophomore Nick Lustrino
to tie the game at three.
After getting out of the first inning, redshirt senior Dan Moller
, who started on the mound, bounced back and finished his outing strong, scattering three hits over the next two innings he tossed. Junior Matt Hockenberry
took over in the bottom half of the fourth with two on and no outs, but pitched his way out of the threat. Hockenberry was outstanding in his appearance and kept the Owls in position to win, as he threw 4.0 innings of scoreless relief work, over which he allowed three hits and struck out two.
Freshman Tim McCarthy
took over in the eighth and pitched into the 10th inning before being relieved by redshirt junior Ryan Kuehn
with two men on base and one out. McCarthy, who was responsible for the runner at third, took the loss.
Temple falls to 18-25 on the year and to 7-14 in Atlantic 10 Conference play. The Owls will now return to Skip Wilson Field, where they will play out the last four games of the 2013 season, beginning with a midweek contest against Rider on Wednesday at 3 PM.
