INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Each year the NCAA honors selected Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multi-year academic performance rate (APR). On Wednesday, the NCAA announced that three of Temple University's athletic programs are among the teams honored including baseball and men's gymnastics for a second straight year, as well as men's tennis.
This announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams who demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APR's within their respective sports. Specifically, these teams posted multi-year APR's in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport.
"This is truly a great day for Temple Athletics with the recognition of three of our varsity sports teams for academic excellence by the NCAA," said Interim Director of Athletics Kevin Clark. "Congratulations to our baseball, men's gymnastics and men's tennis student-athletes for their outstanding work in the classroom. As this is truly a team effort, I want to also recognize our coaches for helping to foster an outstanding environment for academic success, and the hard work by the entire staff of the Nancy and Donald Resnick Academic Support Center for Student-Athletes for providing the support for our teams' scholastic success."
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.
Full APRs for all teams will be released June 11. The 976 teams publicly recognized for high achievement represent 594 women's teams and 382 men's or mixed squads. Top performing APRs this year ranged from 978 to a perfect 1,000, with the majority of teams earning a perfect APR.
