AMBLER, PA - Temple men's soccer streak continued Wednesday at the Ambler Sports Complex and it happened in the usual fashion. Sophomore Jared Martinelli scored the lone goal and junior goalkeeper Dan Scheck held the opponent scoreless as the Owls defeated the Rider Broncs, 1-0.
Temple improved to 4-0 with the win, the program's best start since 1986 when the team opened with five straight victories. The Owls defense, spearheaded by Scheck, has yet to be scored upon in 2013. Rider dropped its first match of the season to fall to 2-1.
"You can't lose a game if you do not give up any goals," said Temple coach David MacWilliams on the play of Scheck. "He has been playing well and the more confident he gets the better he is going to be."
Scheck, who had one save in the match, now has a streak of seven regular season shutouts and he has not allowed a regular season goal in 596 consecutive minutes.
His defensive backfield that consisted of seniors Nolan and Sawyer Hemmer, and freshmen Robert Sagel and Stefan Mueller, provided him with plenty of protection up front.
Rider was also solid defensively with scoring chances being limited for both sides throughout the match. The Broncs starting keeper, Jimmy Quilter (3 saves), had to leave the game in the 70th minute after suffering an injury.
The Owls would finally get on the board in the 78th when Martinelli converted a penalty kick for his fifth goal of the season. The kick was awarded after Chaz Wilson was fouled in the box.
That was lone shot that reserve keeper David Pastuna faced in the match.
Temple next plays at Saint Joseph's in a Philadelphia Soccer Six match on Saturday (7:00 p.m.).
