LOUISVILLE, Ky. - After winning the first set against preseason American Athletic Conference favorite Louisville (6-6, 2-0), Temple volleyball's momentum did not hold as the Owls (10-4, 1-1) ultimately lost the match in four sets by scores of 25-21, 18-25, 16-25 and 16-25.
The match was played in the KFC Yum! Center in front of a crowd of 2,565, the Owls' largest crowd since hosting Penn State in 2009.
Gabriella Matautia led Temple with 13 kills, while Alyssa Drachslin was the team leader in digs with 16. Freshman Halle McCullough recorded a team-best five blocks for Temple.
The majority of Temple's errors in the match were due to the blocking strength of the Cardinals, who recorded 15.5 team blocks to Temple's eight.
Behind six kills from Matautia, the Owls won the first set, 25-21. After a 19-19 tie, Matautia knocked down four of her six kills in the final stretch as the Owls closed out the set with a 6-2 run.
Louisville picked up strength in the remaining sets, as Temple fell behind in each and was unable to close the gaps against the powerhouse Cardinals, who advanced to the NCAA Second Round a season ago and finished at 30-4 overall.
Temple will be back in action at home next weekend, hosting Memphis on Friday, Oct. 4 at 7:00 p.m.
