Men's Gymnastics Opens the 2014 Season with a Fifth Place Finish at West Point Open

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Temple men's gymnastics opened up the 2014 season with a fifth place finish in the team competition at the West Point Open on Friday night. The Owls accumulated 398.650 points in the season opener.
Penn State won the team competition portion of the open with a score of 428.1. William and Mary placed second, Army third and Navy fourth. Springfield finished behind Temple for sixth place.
Temple's top event score came on the floor with a score of 69.200. Casey Polizzotto and Blaise Cosenza each tied for the highest score for Temple in the event with 13.900.
The second best scoring event for Temple occurred at the vault with a score of 68.500. Brendan Williams earned a score of 13.900 to lead the Owls.
The Owls scored 67.350 on the pommel horse and had two athletes excel in the event. Williams demonstrated a performance that earned him a 13.900, and Mike Bittner scored 13.650 as well. Both advanced to the individual event finals tomorrow by placing in the top eight performances of all six teams.
Colton Howard led the squad in the parallel bars with a score of 13.700, helping the Owls earn a team score of 67.400 in the event.
On the rings, Evan Eigner scored a 13.800 and had the highest difficulty score of any events for the Owls with a 5.80. Temple finished with a score of 64.700.
Polizzotto had the highest score for Temple on the high bar with a 12.650. Jakob Welsh scored a 12.250, while Cosenza, Bittner, and Jon Rydzefski all earned 12.200 to give Temple a high bar score of 61.500.
The event finals of the West Point Open will start at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday. Williams and Bittner will be the two gymnasts representing Temple in the finals.
