10.31.14 | Women's Soccer
ORLANDO, Fla. – Temple women's soccer fell 2-1 to SMU in the first round of the American Athletic Conference Tournament Friday evening. In a disappointing end to their season, the Owl's finished 11-8-1 overall, tying their winning record for the third time.
The Owl's yielded a strong first half as they defended against seven shots from the Mustangs. Temple found the goal at the 38:15 minute mark to lead 1-0. The goal came from a header by Kelly Farrell off an assist from Alyssa Kirk. Farrell registered her team-leading 9th goal of the season.
Temple ran the offense hard in the second half, but with little results. Despite registering nine shots on goal, the Owls would not find the net again for the duration of the game. SMU fought back early on as Kelsey Gorney registered the first goal for the Mustangs at the 51:06 minute mark, assisted by Taylor Barg. SMU's Lauren Guerra scored their second goal at the 82:10 minute mark, bringing the Mustangs up by one. The score remained 2-1 until the end of regulation.
Despite an early end to their Season, the Owls have much to celebrate. Temple opened their 2014 campaign with a strong seven-game winning streak, the best start to a season in program history. In addition, the 2014 squad tied their winning record for the third time since its inaugural season: 11-7-0 under head Coach Elleen Richart (1991), and 11-9-0 under head Coach Seamus McWilliams (2001). With only one graduating senior on the team, the Owls will see a familiar lineup at the start of next year's campaign.
