Men's Soccer Hosts UCF

PHILADELPHIA – Temple men's soccer hosts UCF on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.  The Owls look to win their second conference win after opening up conference play with a 2-0 at home against Cincinnati on Sept. 27.  UCF is looking for its first conference win after tying both Memphis and SMU 1-1 at home.

  • Temple is 2-7-1, 1-1-0 with American Athletic Conference play underway for the 2014 season.  The Owls defeated Cincinnati 2-0 in the conference opener on Sept. 27th to snap a three game losing streak and lost at USF last Saturday 3-0.  The Owls are currently tied for third place in the conference as UConn and Tulsa have also split their first two conference games.
  • Sophomore defender Robert Sagel, senior goalkeeper Dan Scheck and junior forward/midfielder Martinelli were selected to the Preseason All-American Athletic Conference Team.  Scheck was voted by the coaches as the Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year.
  • 12 underclassmen have started a game for Temple. 16 total underclassmen have appeared in a game.
  • Five freshmen have started at least five games for the Owls: midfielder Felipe Liborio (nine games), midfielder Miguel Polley (eight), defender Mark Grasela (five), midfielder Brendon Creed (eight), and forward Olli Tynkkynen (five).
  • Temple was predicted to finish fifth in the conference by the preseason coaches' poll.
  • Scheck is currently the career leader in goals allowed average (0.84) and ranks fourth in career wins (16).
  • Sagel has played all 933 minutes of the season.  Sophomore defender Matt Mahoney is second in minutes played with 875.
  • UCF comes into the game with a 1-5-3, 0-0-2 record.  The Knights, one of three conference teams without a conference win, have registered 1-1 ties in their first two conference games at home against Memphis and SMU.
  • The Knights were picked to finish fourth in the American Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll.
  • Junior midfielder/forward Romario Williams leads the team in goals (four), assists (one) and points (9).  Williams was picked as the preseason offensive player of the year and UCF's lone representative on the preseason all-conference team.
  • Senior defender/midfielder Jake Weiss (two goals) and freshman midfielder/forward Matias Pyysalo (one) are the only other players to score for UCF this season.  Six of the seven Knights' goals have come unassisted.
  • Redshirt-sophomore goalkeeper Zach Biggs has started the two conference games, allowing a goal each game with nine total saves.  Sebastian Evers started each nonconference game before Biggs took over.  Evers had a goals allowed average of 1.38 and .787 save percentage.
  • Temple tied UCF 2-2 in their only meeting last year, in Orlando, Fla.  Redshirt-senior forward Chas Wilson had one of Temple's goals.
  • Sagel and Martinelli were selected to the 2013 all-conference second teams.  Sagel was put on the all-freshmen team.
