Big Second Half Powers Men's Basketball Past Louisiana Tech, 82-75

11.17.14 | Men's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA - Led by 20 points from senior Will Cummings and junior Quenton DeCosey as well as a career-high 17 points from sophomore Josh Brown, Temple (2-0) used a big second half to come away with an 82-73 win against visiting Louisiana Tech (1-1) on Monday night at the Liacouras Center.

The game was the second of the Northwestern Mutual Coaches vs. Cancer Classic for Temple, who will now head to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., for its final two games this weekend. First up for the Owls is a Friday night contest against #4/3 Duke at 9:30 p.m. on truTV.

Brown truly had a career night for Temple, stepping up and taking control in the second half despite a combined five all-conference guards on the floor for both teams. He scored 10 points in a row for the Owls during a key run in the second half, hitting 5-of-7 from the floor in the second period.

Cummings scored 13 of his 20 points at the free throw line and also tied his career high with nine boards. Brown tied his career high on the glass as well with seven rebounds, and Mark Williams pulled down a game and career-high 10 boards for the Owls.

Raheem Appleby led LA Tech with a game-high 26 points including four buckets from long range, and Erik McCree added 14 for the Bulldogs. Kenneth Smith dished a game-high eight assists while also pulling down eight boards.

The Owls only held brief one-point leads in the first half, but battled back from from as much as a 12-point deficit to come within four at halftime, 38-34. Temple started the second half on a 10-0 run and never allowed the Bulldogs to come within fewer than four the rest of the way. The final minute of the contest featured a combined 20 points as LA Tech's comeback attempt included two treys and sent Temple to the line for 14 total shots.

DeCosey hit 3-of-4 from the field and 2-of-2 at the stripe to lead the Owls with nine points in the first half, while Daniel Dingle added eight and Cummings scored seven. Both Dingle and DeCosey gave the Owls leads near the 12 and 11-minute marks of the half, but the Bulldogs responded with a 13-0 run to lead 29-17 with 8:34 remaining.

Williams ended Temple's five-minute dry spell at 6:42, and the Owls continued to chip away down the stretch of the half. Dingle and Brown each scored four points as Temple closed out the half out-scoring the Bulldogs 17-9. Helping the Owls' cause was their performance at the line, as they hit all six attempts in the final 2:40 to narrow the gap to four points at the break.

Temple kept its momentum going to start the second half, opening the period on a 10-0 run led by five points from DeCosey. The Owls held the Bulldogs scoreless for nearly the first five minutes, taking a six-point, 44-38 lead at 15:17.

LA Tech cut the margin to four but came no closer than that the rest of the game. Brown scored 10 straight points for Temple in a 10-4 over the next three minutes, capping it with an old-fashioned three-point play for a 54-44 Temple lead at 11:23.

Six quick points for LA Tech once again cut the Owls' lead to four near the 10-minute mark, but a 14-5 Temple run over the next six minutes put the margin at 11 with four minutes remaining. The Bulldogs hit some shots from behind the arc to come within seven in the final minute, but the Owls made enough buckets from the stripe to hold them off.
