Baseball Drops Doubleheader at VCU

RICHMOND, Va. – Temple baseball (1-4) dropped both games of a doubleheader at VCU, losing game one 5-2 and game two 10-0. 

The first game was scoreless until Temple opened the scoring in the top of the fourth inning.  Daniel Dragos singled to third base to start the inning.  After Derek Peterson struck out and Rob Amaro flied out, Dragos stole second and was knocked in off a Michael D'Acunti single to left field.

The Owls added another run the next inning.  With one out, Dragos scored Jimmy Kerrigan with a sacrifice fly to right field.
VCU answered with two runs in the sixth inning.  They had three singles to load the bases.  With one out, Connor Stasky came in to relieve Matt Hockenberry.  Stasky got one out with a fly ball to center field.  The Rams then used two walks to score both runs.

Hockenberry lasted five and one-thirds innings as the starting pitcher for the Owls.  He had four strike outs with no walks and six hits allowed.

The Rams then took the lead for the rest of the game with three more runs the next inning, scoring off two singles and a ground out to second base.

In the second game, VCU scored four runs in the first to take the lead from the beginning of the game.

VCU's starter Matt Blanchard and two relievers combined for a four hit shutout of the Owls.

Simon Mathews started the game for Temple.  He went four innings, striking out two with one walk, six hits and six runs (four unearned) in his second collegiate start.  Zach Batchelor and Ryan Kuehn combined for three scoreless innings of relief.

Dragos went three for four hitting with one run and RBI for the day.  Jimmy Kerrigan was three for seven on the day with one run as well.

Temple will finish the three game series at VCU tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.  Preston Hill will be the starter for the Owls.
