Temple baseball scored three runs in the 14th inning to defeat UConn 7-4 at J.O. Christian Field on Friday afternoon. The extra-innings win improves Temple's record to 11-19, 6-8 while UConn falls to 18-18, 5-5.
With no one on base and two outs in the 14th inning, David Hall
reached base and went to second on an error by the third baseman. Hall then went to third on a wild pitch. Daniel Dragos
then drew a walk. Josh Mason
brought home the game-winning run on a single to right field. Another wild pitch allowed Dragos and Mason to advance a base. A double by Reyn Sugai
to left field knocked in Dragos and Mason to extend Temple's lead to three.Patrick Krall
(1-0) retired the side in the bottom of the 14th inning to give the Owls the win. Krall pitched the last four innings for Temple and allowed only one walk and one hit while striking out one batter.
Temple led 4-2 going into the bottom of the ninth, but a two-run home run off closer Zach Batchelor
pushed the game into extra innings.
Temple scored the first run in the first inning. Derek Peterson
drew a walk with two outs, and Michael D'Acunti
was hit by a pitch. A wild pitch put Peterson to third and D'Acunti to second. Robert Amaro
singled to the shortstop that allowed Peterson to score.
The Owls increased their lead to two the next inning. Frank D'Agostino
walked and went to third off a single to right field by Mason. Reyn Sugai
hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to knock in D'Agostino.
After the Huskies tied the game up with one run each in the second and third innings, Temple got back the lead in the sixth inning. D'Agostino led off with a single up the middle. Dragos advanced D'Agostino to second on a sacrifice bunt. Sugai knocked in D'Agostino for the second time of the game with a single to center field.
The Owls added another run in the seventh. Peterson led off the inning with a walk and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by D'Acunti. Peterson scored on a RBI single by D'Agostino to left field.Patrick Vanderslice
went six innings as the starting pitcher for Temple. Vanderslice gave up seven hits, two runs (one earned), and one walk with three strikeouts. Preston Hill
relieved Vanderslice in the seventh inning and record two outs. Tim McCarthy
finished the seventh inning and pitched the eighth as well, allowing only one hit and zero walks with one strikeout.
Six Temple batters had multiple hits in the game. D'Acunti had the most hits, going four out of five. Sugai had four RBI off two hits.
The Owls drew seven walks compared to the Huskies' three.
Temple goes for the series win tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. as Ryan Kuehn
will get the start.
