Baseball To Play Villanova Tomorrow at Skip Wilson Field

PHILADELPHIA – Temple baseball has added a non-conference game against Big Five Baseball foe Villanova at Skip Wilson Field tomorrow at 3:00 p.m.

This is the second time the Owls will face off against the Wildcats.  Temple was victorious in their first matchup against Villanova in the Big Five Baseball Bash at Saint Joseph's on March 9th, winning 7-3.  The two schools will play once again next Wednesday at Villanova at 3:15 p.m.

Temple (12-19, 7-8) is coming a weekend series win at UConn.  The Owls dropped the first game, but then won the next two to take the series from the Huskies.  Friday's game lasted 14 innings before the Owls scored three runs in the 14th inning to win 7-4.  Temple has won three conference series and currently sits in sixth place of the conference standings, four games ahead of last place where every conference coach predicted Temple to finish.

Three players have started every game for the Owls this season.  Senior Derek Peterson is second on the team with a .295 hitting average, with 17 of his 33 hits going for doubles for a slugging percentage of .449.  Senior Rob Amaro leads the team with 29 RBI and a .305 batting average.  Sophomore Jimmy Kerrigan, the only underclassman to start all 31 games, has managed a .275 average and is third on the team with 30 hits.  Senior Daniel Dragos has started 28 games and played all but one game as an outfielder or designated hitter.  He leads the team with 17 walks and eight stolen bases.  He has been caught only once stealing.

The starting pitcher for Temple is TBD.  Connor Staskey started the last non-conference game against Lehigh, pitching four scoreless innings with zero hits allowed while striking out five.  He has not allowed a run in his last three appearances.  Overall, Staskey has a 4.50 ERA in 16 innings pitched.

Villanova (11-24) enters the game on a two game losing streak having dropped the last two games in a home weekend series against Creighton.  The Wildcats have lost five of their past six games.  They are 3-11 in road games that includes a five game-losing streak.
Powere hitter Max Beerman leads Villanova at the plate.  Beerman has started 33 games with a team-leading .339 hitting average.  He leads the team in slugging percentage (.554) with 17 extra base hits, including three home runs and three triples, and is second in RBI with 23.  Connor Jones leads the team with 26 RBI.  Jones has started every game and also leads the team with six triples and four home runs.  Todd Czinege is third on the team with a .292 hitting average with five doubles, two triples and two homeruns.  He is one of three Wildcats to start every game.

No starter has been determined for Villanova.  Jeff Courter or JB Kole will likely start as they have each started four games.  Courter is 0-3 with a 7.76 ERA.  He has walked seven batters while striking out eight while giving up eight extra-base hits in 29 innings pitched.  Kole is 1-3 with a 8.41 ERA.  In 20.1 innings pitched, he has 18 strikeouts and 16 walks.

Villanova holds the lead in the series 59-55.
