Men's Soccer Picked Fifth in Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Temple men's soccer was picked fifth with 33 points in the American Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll on Monday afternoon. Senior goalkeeper Dan Scheck was named the Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year while junior forward Jared Martinelli and sophomore defenseman Robert Sagel were also selected to the All-Conference Team.
The UConn Huskies were a unanimous selection by the coaches to finish first. USF (48 points) was picked second, followed by Tulsa (41) and UCF (39). SMU (27) was predicted to finish sixth behind Temple, and Memphis (21) and Cincinnati (15) rounded out the poll. Last season the Owls were predicted to finish last by every coach and surprised them all by finishing fourth.
Scheck ranked 14th in the nation in Goals Against Average in 2013 (0.675). He made 79 saves last season for a save percentage of 0.859, and tied the school record for shutouts in a season with nine.
Martinelli led the team in goals (6) and assists (4) for the second straight season. He earned second team all-conference and Third Team National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and was selected to the Philadelphia Soccer Six All-Star Team.
Sagel made a huge impact in his freshman season last year, finishing fourth in scoring with three goals and one assist as a defenseman. He was fourth on the team in minutes played, sitting out only 53 minutes all season long. He garnered numerous honors, including second team all-conference, freshmen all-conference, Second Team NSCAA All-Northeast Region and the William "Bill" Wilkinson Rookie of the Year for the Philadelphia Soccer Six.
