Women's Soccer Defeats St. Bonaventure 1-0 on the Road to Stay Unbeaten

9.12.14 | Women's Soccer

ITHACA, N.Y. — Temple women's soccer defeated St. Bonaventure 1-0 on Friday afternoon to start off the Cornell Classic. The Owls improve their winning streak to six games, and put themselves one win away from recording the longest win streak in school history. The 2014 squad now sits tied with the 1991 and 1995 teams for the longest winning streak in program history.

Temple started the first half aggressively and outshot the Bonnies 15-2, but couldn't find the back of the net. Temple finally did connect early on in the second half at the 54:23 minute mark. On the goal, Kayla Cunningham took a shot from the right side out from about 18 yards. The shot was toward the far side, hit off the keeper's fingertips, which started a mad dash to the far post by two Temple players and a SBU defender. Paula Jurewicz got to it first and put it in goal for a belated birthday present as she turned 21 the day before. The assist was credited to Cunningham. The Owls continued their aggressive play and ended the match out-shooting the Bonnies, 24-5.

"St. Bonaventure was a really organized team, and a different kind of team than we faced." said head coach Seamus O'Connor. "We played very professional today.  We got ahead and managed the lead. I am very proud of how the team improved on shots on target in the second half. It's always nice to address an issue at the half and then see your team go out and execute."

Shauni Kerkhoff registered her fourth shutout of the season and brought up her season save total to 27. Kerkhoff currently sits at sixth-all time in saves with 185, while holding the highest save percentage (.837) and highest goals against average (1.00) of all time.

Temple will conclude the classic against host Cornell on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. This will be the first meeting in program history between the Owls and the Big Red.

The tournament format will award three points for a victory, one point for a draw and no points for a loss. The orders of tiebreakers to declare a champion are head-to-head result, goals scored, then goal differential. An all-tournament team of 11 players will be announced by 6 p.m. Sunday. It will consist of three forwards, three midfielders, three defenders, one goalie, plus another player of any position.
