PHILADELPHIA (Palestra)
- Temple volleyball opened the Big 5 Invitational with a convincing, three-set win against city rival La Salle on Friday afternoon. The Owls (7-3) were strong across the board with a balanced attack and solid defense, led by Alyssa Drachslin with 20 digs.

Temple defeated La Salle (6-8) by scores of 25-11, 25-15 and 25-22.

Caroline Grattan led all players with 11 kills, while teammates Tyler Davis and Kirsten Overton knocked down 10 kills apiece. Overton, already ranked in the top 25 in the nation in hitting percentage, committed just two errors on 15 attempts with her 10 kills for a final percentage of .533.

Alex Schmitt had six blocks for Temple to lead all players in the match. The Owls got 19 assists from Sandra Sydlik and 12 from Tiffany Connatser as the two split setting duties. Dara Peric added 12 digs to five kills, helping Drachslin in keeping many plays alive for Temple.

The Owls rolled to victory in the first set, getting their first double-digit lead at 16-6 and eventually winning 25-11. Davis had four kills to lead all players in the set, while also recording two digs. Drachslin nearly reached double figures in digs in the first set alone, finishing with nine.

Temple had another strong start in the first set, jumping out to a 6-1 lead, but La Salle came back to tie the score twice before taking a lead at 11-10. It would prove to be the only lead for the Explorers, as the Owls responded in a big way down the stretch, closing out with a 15-3 run to win 25-14. Grattan rattled off three straight kills in the final four points, and as a team the Owls recorded 15 kills to La Salle's seven.

The third set was the tightest of the match with nine ties, and the Owls had to make a comeback near the end after trailing 20-17. Temple tied the score at 21-21 thanks to a block by Grattan and Schmitt, and the Owls also took the next two points. Drachslin made a diving save on a ball that was then put down for a kill by Grattan off a set from Connatser, giving Temple a 23-21 lead.

La Salle came back within one before Grattan struck again with a kill, and she then ended the match with an ace.

Temple will play two more matches on Saturday, facing Villanova at 10:00 a.m. and host Penn at 7:00 p.m.
