Men's Soccer Shuts Out Cincinnati 2-0 in First Game of Conference Action
9.27.14 | Men's Soccer
AMBLER, Pa. – Temple men's soccer defeated Cincinnati 2-0 to open conference play at Ambler Sports Complex on Saturday afternoon. The Owls snap a three game losing streak to improve to 2-6-1, 1-0-0 while the Bearcats drop to 2-6-1, 0-1-0.
Missing four starters due to injury, the Owls came out to start the game with much energy and it paid off in the eighth minute. Miguel Polley made a nice touch pass to Jared Martinelli, and Martinelli blasted a shot past the goalie just inside the box on the right side. The goal was Martinelli's second of the year, and Mark Grasela also assisted on the play.
"What we wanted to do was get on the board first," said head coach David MacWilliams. "Every other game we've been chasing and never had the lead except for one other game, and that game we won (against Sacramento State). So both games we've had the lead we have won."
Temple came out with the same type of high energy to start the second half, and it paid off once again. Polley again made a nice touch pass to Chas Wilson, and Wilson buried a shot just outside of the box to make it 2-0. The second goal of the season for Wilson was also assisted by Jonah Williams.
"Movement without the ball, we worked on that throughout the week, and that was the key today. We talked as a group and at times we have been playing as individuals searching for goals."
Goalkeeper Dan Scheck (2-4-1) made two saves for his second shutout of the season. Scheck now moves into fourth place in career all-time wins at Temple with 16.
Temple outshot Cincinnati in both halves and finished with 18. Wilson and Martinelli combined for eight shots on goal.
The Owls return to action next Saturday at USF at 7:30 p.m.
