FLORHAM PARK , N.J. - On Thursday, Jan. 15, the New York Jets announced Todd Bowles as their head coach. Bowles, who was the former defensive coordinator for the Arizona Cardinals, was a four-year defensive back for Temple from 1982-1985.

While with the Owls, Bowles put together an outstanding career, accumulating 245 tackles and seven interceptions, both of which rank in the Top 25 in the Temple record books. He was named honorable mention All-America in 1984, after posting 86 tackles and four sacks for a loss of 44 yards for the season. In the same year, Bowles was also named first-team All-East by the Associated Press. Bowles later went on to have an eight-year playing career in the NFL, including two stints with the Washington Redskins. He was inducted into the Temple Football Hall of Fame in 2001.

Congratulations came from many within the Temple football family, including current head coach Matt Rhule who said, "We are thrilled for Todd that he has been named Head Coach of the New York Jets.  Todd has always been great to us whether it has been visiting him in Arizona, at our spring game back here or in any other way we have needed.  He truly bleeds Cherry and White and we will root for his continued success in New York."

Former Temple running back and current radio broadcaster Paul Palmer, who was a teammate of Bowles', told the New York Post, "He was very confident, but he was quiet. As a ballplayer, he would lead by example. He's not a loud person. But he's someone you can trust and he's very knowledgeable. He's going to be someone the Jets can believe in."

Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians talked fondly of his former player, who he coached while at the helm of the Temple program from 1983-88. "I couldn't be happier for Todd. The Jets got themselves a tremendous coach and a better person. We're sorry to lose him but we all knew this day was coming, especially with the job he did here the last two years. Todd and I go back more than 30 years. He was one of my captains at Temple and it was obvious then how special he was. His passion for the game and intelligence are as high as anyone I've ever been around. Todd's been ready for this for a long time and I'm ecstatic for him to finally get the opportunity," Arians said in a statement released by the Cardinals.
