Women's Soccer Edges Out SMU, 3-2 for Milestone Win
10.22.15 | Women's Soccer
AMBLER, Pa. – Temple women's soccer picked up their 11th victory of the season during a 3-2 battle against the SMU Mustangs on Thursday. The Owls (11-6-1, 3-4-1 The American) tied a program record for most wins in a season (1991, 2000, and 2014) and earned their first win over the Mustangs since the inception of the American Athletic Conference in 2013.
The game started out in the Mustangs favor, when Blair Thorpe cleared from left side of the field and headed the ball to Vanessa Valadez in the 20th minute. Valadez found the right side of the net for her eighth goal of the season.
The Owls then were able to tie things up in the 38th minute after Paula Jurewicz cleared the field from the far left side to find Shannon Senour, who was able to head the ball directly into the back of the net for her second goal on the season.
With 15 seconds left in the first half, SMU's Claire Oates took a penalty kick to give the Mustangs the 2-1 lead going into the intermission.
The Owls came out aggressive in the second half, outshooting SMU 8-3. In the 87th minute, Erin Lafferty would help tie the game up at two with a penalty kick. Overall, Lafferty led the team with four shots and tied a program record for career games played at 77 (set by Mary Mulvenna from 1997-00 and Kelly Lare from 2003-07).
After a red card was assessed to SMU's goalkeeper Catie Brown, Lafferty lined up to take another penalty kick with 29 seconds on the clock and delivered a shot directly into the net for the game-winner and her seventh of the season.
For the first time in program history, the Owls have posted back-to-back 11 win seasons and have the chance to set the record, something head coach Seamus O'Connor thinks is the new standard at Temple.
"I thought last year was unbelievable, I didn't know how were going to 11 wins because it's a hard mark to get to in this conference. From top to bottom, it's good," said O'Connor. "When we got stuck on eight for a while, I was thinking 'oh wow.' But for this team to get to 11 again for the first time ever, back-to-back 11 wins, it sets the standard going forward for what we expect at Temple."
The Owls will close out their season on Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. matchup with the Houston Cougars. The team will also honor its nine seniors prior to kickoff.
