Freshman Sam Soeth
shot a one-over 72 to lead Temple Golf to a 10th place finish following the first round of competition at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate. The Owls carded a 298 as a team, nine strokes behind leader West Virginia (289) at the 16-team tournament held at the par-71, 7,358-yard Lonnie Poole Golf Course on the campus of North Carolina State.
Playing without its senior All-American, Brandon Matthews
, who is competing the week in the first stage of the Web.com Q School, the Owls held their own against a tough field and on a challenging course.
Soeth, who prepped at nearby Marple Newtown High, turned in his best round of the fall season to tie for eighth among the field of 91 golfers. Sophomore John Barone
was two strokes and tied for 28th with a 74. Freshman Trey Wren
carded a 75 to tie for 43rrd. Sophomore Evan Thornton
rounded out the Owl scorers with a 77 to finish tied for 59th.
West Virginia was followed by Campbell (290), N.C. State (292), Chattanooga (292), UNC Greensboro (293), Lipscomb (295), Loyola-Md. (296), Wofford (297), Augusta (297), Temple, George Washington (299), USC Upstate (300), Western Carolina (301), Drexel (304), Seton Hall (305) and Hartford (314).
Max Sear (West Virginia) and Robin Petersson (Augusta) lead the field with three-under 68s.
Temple will tee off for the second and final round of play Tuesday morning at 8:00 a.m.
