Matakevich Named Bednarik Award Semifinalist

PHILADELPHIA – Tyler Matakevich, senior linebacker of the #23/23 Temple Owls, advanced to the semifinalist stage of the Chuck Bednarik Award today. The nation's active career tackles leader joined 19 others from the watch list for the award presented to the country's best defensive player of the year by the Maxwell Football Club. Matakevich was also on the watch list last season. This year, he has 78 tackles, eight for loss, four sacks, and leads the American Athletic Conference with five interceptions.
Semifinalist voting for the award, presented by the Maxwell Football Club, will begin on Thursday, November 5th and close on Sunday November 22nd. Eligible voters include Maxwell Football Club members, NCAA Head Football Coaches, Sports Information Directors and selected national media.
Matakevich and the 7-1 Owls will travel to Dallas for a Friday night showdown with the SMU Mustangs. Kickoff for the conference clash is 8:00 p.m. and the game will be on ESPN2.
