Lacrosse Suffers First Loss of the Season to Cornell

PHILADELPHIA - After starting the season 3-0, Temple lacrosse suffered its first loss at the hands of visiting Cornell on a snowy Saturday afternoon at Geasey Field. The Big Red used a 7-0 run that stretched from the first half into the second to put the game away, eventually winning 17-8.

The snow began falling early, and the game was ultimately called with 7:17 left on the clock due to unplayable field conditions.

It was the first game of the season for Cornell, and the Big Red got hat tricks from three players led by Lindsay Toppe with five goals and an assist.

Temple's Nicole Tiernan recorded her fifth career hat trick with four goals, scoring two of those on free position opportunities.

Draw controls were a major factor in the loss for the Owls, who tallied just eight to Cornell's 19.

The Owls held an early 2-1 lead before Cornell rattled off three straight and remained in the lead for the rest of the game after taking a 3-2 advantage 10 minutes into the first half. Seventeen of the game's 25 goals were scored in the opening period, with Cornell taking an 11-6 lead into the break after scoring the final three goals.

The Big Red opened the second half with four more goals in the first seven minutes to put the game out of reach for Temple.

In addition to Tiernan's four goals, the Owls got a goal apiece from Megan Tiernan, Carly Demato, Brooke Williams and Nicole Barretta.

Temple will be back in action at home next Saturday, Feb. 28 against Lafayette at 1:00 p.m.
