Men's Crew Nabs Two Gold Medals at Murphy Cup

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. — A pair of gold medal finishes highlighted the action for the Temple men's crew team, as the Owls opened their spring schedule at the 33rd annual Murphy Cup Regatta on Cooper River. Temple nabbed wins in both the lightweight varsity four and the novice four, while also recording top-three finishes in both the varsity eight and second varsity eight events. 

The lightweight four topped crews from Lafayette, Fordham, Michigan, Rhode Island, and Franklin and Marshall en route to their victory. The Owls clocked in at 7:01.27, nearly four seconds ahead of the second-place Lafayette crew.

In novice four action, Temple's boat advanced to the finals with with a commanding win in the opening heat. The Owls recorded a time of 7:14.00, topping the next-fastest boat (Michigan) by 24 seconds. In the finals, Temple recorded a time of 6:58.92, to out-pace UNC, Virginia, Delaware, Lehigh, and Philadelphia. 

Temple's second varsity boat finished second overall in 6:04.72, just over a second behind Drexel (6:03.45), the top finisher in the event. The Owls advanced to the finals with a second place finish in the opening heats.

Also finishing in the medals, Temple's varsity eight won its opening heat before placing third in the finals. The Owls recorded a time of 6:00.43 in the finals, topping crews from Michigan, Holy Cross, and Delaware. 

Temple's varsity four just missed out on a spot in the finals, recording a third place finish in their opening heat. The crew recorded a time of 7:23.00, only three tenths of a second behind third-place Holy Cross and under three seconds off of second-place Loyola. 

The Owls' novice eight also narrowly missed a spot in the finals, finishing second in their heat. Temple's boat finished in a time of 6:37.94, behind only La Salle, who clocked in at 6:34.07.

Elsewhere for the Owls, the Temple third varsity finished sixth in their heat, clocking in a 7:27.85.

The men's crew team is back in action on April 4th, taking on Bucknell and Georgetown on the Schuylkill River.
