4.16.15 | Men's Tennis
TULSA, Okla. – Almost four weeks ago, the men's tennis team defeated UConn at Upper Dublin Tennis Center, 6-1. Today, the Owls took down the Huskies, 4-0 to move on in the American Athletic Conference Championship.
"I was really happy with the way that the guys played today," said head coach Steve Mauro. "Doubles was close; UConn played really well in doubles, but we managed to get the point and then played strong tennis in singles."
The Owls took the doubles point and the early 1-0 lead. Vineet Naran and Santiago Canete defeated Andrew Ginzberg and Zac McEntee at the second flight, 6-4, while Nicolas Paulus and Hicham Belkssir battled with Jacob Spreyer and Christopher Toner at the first flight, 7-5
Once singles started, the Owls showed no slowing down. Belkssir gave Temple the 2-0 lead after he picked up a 6-2, 6-3 win at the third flight over Toner. Paulus picked up his 52nd career singles victory with a 6-1, 6-4 win at the second flight over McEntee; Paulus is now fourth in career singles victories since 2001. Canete took an early lead at the first flight, winning 6-1 over Spreyer, but a back-and-forth battle ensued in the second set, with Canete ultimately prevailing with a 7-6(5) win to seal the victory for the Owls.
"The guys were up for the match today and I'm really happy we got the first-round win in the opening round in a strong conference," said Mauro. "We're eager to play tomorrow against one of the top ranked teams in the country."
The Owls move to 15-9 on the season and will face #1 USF, who is #19 in the ITA rankings, tomorrow at 10 a.m. ET/9 a.m. CT.
