Men's Crew Wins Two Golds and One Silver at SIRA Championships

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. — The Temple men's crew team had an outstanding weekend of competition, racing at the two-day Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships. The Owls came away with medals in three of the four events they entered, while taking fourth place in the other.

Temple advanced to the finals in every contested category. When the racing was finished, the team boasted a pair of gold medals, a silver medal, and a fourth place overall finish.

The Owls nabbed championship titles in both the second varsity eight and novice eight categories. Each crew swept through the racing, recording first place finishes in the heats, the semifinals, and the grand finals. The second varsity eight boat opened Saturday's racing with a slim .65 second win over Virginia, while in the semifinals, Temple topped its second-closest finisher (Delaware), by over seven seconds. In the championships, the Owls recorded a time of 5:48.70 to finish ahead of second-place Virginia by two seconds.

Temple's novice eight boat also had a similar path to the gold medal, finishing first in each of its three races. On Saturday, the Owls opened with an eight-second win in the heats, and then had a slim 1.2 second victory over second-place UNC in the semifinals. In the championship race, Temple clocked in at 6:01.91, topping second-place Virginia's time of 6:02.14, as well as four other schools.

In fours action, Temple's varsity boat claimed a silver medal finish. The Owls took second in its opening heat, and then won its semifinal race to earn a spot in the grand final. In the championship, Temple came in at 6:36.33, just behind the College of Charleston, who finished in 6:34.60.

Temple's varsity eight also had a fantastic weekend on the water, advancing through the heats and semis to race in the grand finals. On Saturday, the Owls won their opening heat, and then placed second in the semifinals, behind only Virginia. In the grand final, Temple recorded a fourth-place time of 5:49.124, which was just 1.11 seconds off of a silver-medal finish.

The Owls are back in action next weekend, returning home to compete for the Bergen Cup on the Schuylkill River.
