Men's Crew Earns Six Top-Three Finishes at Bergen Cup

PHILADELPHIA — The Temple men's crew team earned top-three finishes in all six races, competing at the Bergen Cup City Championships on Saturday. The annual event pitted Temple against Philadelphia-rivals Drexel, St. Joe's, Philadelphia University, Villanova, and La Salle, on the Schuylkill River.
The Owls grabbed first place finishes in both the varsity four and second varsity four races. In the varsity four event, Temple recorded a time of 6:45.2 to finish ahead of second-place Drexel (6:46.8) and four other boats in the six-competitor field. In the second varsity race, the Owls grabbed a first-place finish in a time of 6:56, while the team's "B" boat finished third with a time of 7:34.
In varsity eight racing, the Owls grabbed silver medal finishes in both races. In the varsity eight field, Temple (5:57.7) took second to only Drexel (5:49.6) in the five-team race. The second varsity eight race saw the Owls also finish second to Drexel, as the cherry and white clocked in at 5:58.2.
Both of Temple's freshmen/novice boats finished in third place at the event. In eights racing, the Owls took third behind a pair of Drexel boats, clocking in at 6:10. In the four event, The Owls were third behind Drexel and Villanova, recording a time of 7:10.
After the racing, Temple held a boat dedication ceremony, naming boats in honor of Dr. Athole Jacobi, June 3, 2000, and Mike Mirabella '14. Owl alumni also gathered to celebrate Head Coach Dr. Gavin White's 35th year of coaching.
Temple will now gear up for the Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta on May 8 and 9. The event is the largest collegiate regatta in the United States, with over 100 colleges and Universities from the U.S. and Canada.
