Lacrosse Drops a Nail-Biter at Georgetown, 13-12, to Conclude 2015 Season

4.25.15 | Women's Lacrosse

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Despite a career-high six goals from Megan Tiernan and a big early lead, Temple lacrosse lost a nail-biter on the road at Georgetown, 13-12, to conclude the 2015 season. The Owls' overall record is 10-6, with a BIG EAST Conference mark of 2-5.

Georgetown came back from a 5-0 deficit to get the win that earns the Hoyas a share of the league title with Florida. The Hoyas finish the regular season at 7-9 overall but 6-1 in the BIG EAST.

Tiernan added two assists to her six goals for an impressive eight points overall. Kirstie Connor was the only other multiple-goal scorer for the Owls with two. Nicole Tiernan, who finishes the season as Temple's leading scorer with 35 goals, recorded both a goal and an assist.

The Owls raced out to a 4-0 lead in the first three minutes of the game, starting with a free position goal from Megan Tiernan less than a minute in. Connor and Nicole Tiernan scored 15 seconds apart in the third minute of the game, and Megan Tiernan scored her second goal near the end of the same minute.

Temple held Georgetown scoreless over the next 10 minutes thanks to a pair of saves for Jaqi Kakalecik, and the Owls made it a 5-0 lead on a Nicole Barretta goal at 17:39.

The Hoyas finished out the half with three goals to Temple's one, which was a free position goal for Avery Longstaff near the five-minute mark. The final goal of the period was Georgetown's, and Temple took a 6-3 lead into the break.

Georgetown kept its momentum going in the second half, scoring the first three goals in just over five minutes to tie the game at 6-6. The Owls answered with two goals for an 8-6 lead, but back-to-back goals for the Hoyas' Kristen Bandos over a 30-second span tied the game yet again at 8-8.

With 13:13 remaining, Megan Tiernan scored her fourth goal and followed it up less than a minute later with goal number five. Rachel Schwaab completed a 3-0 run for the Owls with an assist from Tiernan at 10:07 to give Temple an 11-8 lead.

As they had done all game, Georgetown was able to rally yet again. The Hoyas rattled off five goals in just under three minutes to take a 13-11 lead with six minutes to go. Megan Tiernan got an assist from twin sister Nicole near the one-minute mark to put Temple within a goal, but the Hoyas earned the final draw control of the game and held possession to prevent the Owls from tying the score.

Kakalecik finished with six saves for Temple, while Georgetown's Megan McDonald, who came into the game with the Hoyas trailing 4-0, made nine saves.
