INDIANA, Pa. – Former Temple defensive back Sam Shaffer will be inducted into the Indiana County Sports Hall of Fame on Sunday, May 17, 2015. Shaffer was a standout football star at Indiana High School.
Shaffer was a letterwinner at Temple from 1978-81 under head coach Wayne Hardin. As a senior, Shaffer entered the Temple record books when he recorded nine interceptions, which also led all of Division I programs. Two of Shaffer's nine interceptions were picks off Pitt quarterback Dan Marino. He finished his career ranked fifth all-time with 11.
After graduating from Temple with a bachelor's degree in political science/pre law in 1982, Shaffer went on to be an assistant coach under George Chaump for 13 years at West Virginia, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Marshall, and Navy. While at IUP, Shaffer and Chaump built a team that was third in the national Division II polls and were crowned Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West champions in 1985. Two years later, the pair helped lead Marshall to a Division I-AA championship game, after the team started the season 2-3.
Shaffer graduated from Indiana High School, where he led a defense in 1976 that allowed only 5.9 points a game and would finish with an 8-0-1 record, a final ranking of fifth in the state of Pennsylvania, and a Western Conference Championship.
Shaffer will be one of eight new members of the Indiana County Sports Hall of Fame, including his brother Frank, who was a standout wrestler at Indiana and Navy.
