Kickin' It with Jared Martinelli and Matt Mahoney

Throughout the 2015 season, two men's soccer student-athletes will be featured in our "Kickin' It" series of player features. The first two Owls being featured this week are senior Jared Martinelli and junior Matt Mahoney.

Where are you originally from, and what is your past playing experience with soccer before Temple?
Martinelli: I am from Mechanicsburg, Pa. I played club soccer for HMMS Eagle FC and went to Cumberland Valley High School.
Mahoney: I was born in Buffalo, N.Y. When I was 2 years old, I moved to Poughkeepsie, N.Y. and I currently live there. Before Temple, I played soccer since I was four years old.

What made you decide to attend Temple and compete with the men's soccer program?
Martinelli: I decided to attend Temple because I got a good feel for the team and the coaches while I was on my visit. I also wanted to go to school somewhere close to home.
Mahoney: The soccer program. My main aim when looking for a college to attend was to play at the highest level of soccer I could while still getting a good education. Temple provided both of those for me and I was lucky enough to be scouted by the coaching staff.

What do you enjoy most about being a Temple student-athlete? What's the biggest challenge?
Martinelli: I enjoy competing in one of the best conferences in college athletics. My biggest challenge is trying to balance soccer and school.
Mahoney: Being with close friends all the time and automatically having close friends since the first day of freshman year. Finding friends in college isn't always so easy, and being in a team sport, I know it really helped me. The biggest challenge is managing your classes. We travel to a lot of places during the season, and it takes a toll. We are tired a lot, physically and mentally, but we know we still have to get the work done in the classroom.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time away from soccer?
Martinelli: In my spare time I enjoy playing softball and Frisbee golf.
Mahoney: Honestly, in my spare time away from soccer, I am still playing soccer on my own, or being involved somehow with soccer. But besides soccer, I do like going down the shore for a couple of weeks on vacation during the summer, as well as hanging out with friends whenever I can.

Favorite pump-up song to listen to before a game?
Martinelli: I usually don't listen to music before a game.
Mahoney: I am not a big music man so I do not really have a favorite pump-up song for before a game. Usually for me, I will be open to any genre before a game and it is hit or miss if it pumps me up or not.

Do you have any pre-game rituals/superstitions?
Martinelli: No.
Mahoney: I don't have one big superstition before a game, but one thing I always do when I get on the field right before we start the game after the huddle is do a little shuffle and then sprint to my position.

Who is the funniest member of the men's soccer team?
Martinelli: Pat Lestingi.
Mahoney: There are too many funny people to name. I'd say top three are Carlos Moros Gracia, Pat Lestingi, and Dalton Andrusko

What is your most memorable moment so far in your Temple soccer career?
Martinelli: Scoring a hat trick against Wofford my sophomore year.
Mahoney: My most memorable moment is the final game of our season my freshman year before going into playoffs. We had to win the game in order to clinch 4th place and host USF at home for the first playoff game. We ended up winning and I remember the passion and energy in the moment and I think it has been the best moment in my Temple career so far.

Who do you look up to as a role model in your life?
Martinelli: My parents.
Mahoney: I look up to both of my parents as role models. I wouldn't be who I am today without them. Since I was young, they have been to basically every game I have ever played.

Favorite place to eat on road trips?
Martinelli: "The OG" (Olive Garden).
Mahoney: Olive Garden. I love Olive Garden, every time we go there on away trips I get so full and love it.

Favorite Movie/TV Show?
Martinelli: Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad.
Mahoney: Harry Potter series is definitely my favorite movie series ever since I was a kid.

Favorite professional soccer team and player?
Martinelli: I am actually not a soccer fan. I follow the Steelers and Antonio Brown is my favorite player.
Mahoney: My favorite professional team right now in the United States is NYCFC. Overseas, my favorite team is FC Barcelona because their style of play, and my favorite player is Lionel Messi.

What are you most looking forward to this season?
Martinelli: Playing Penn State and Villanova.
Mahoney: I'm most looking forward to getting back to winning. Last season we kind of forgot what it was like to win and this year we have already won and tied our two preseason games, so it is starting off well, and I can't wait for the actual season to begin on Friday.

What would be your super power of choice?
Martinelli: The ability to fly.
Mahoney: The ability to fly because flying in planes is always fun, you'd get to see things from a different perspective, and be able to go really fast.

What is the one thing you can't live without?
Martinelli: Dental floss.
Mahoney: Soccer. It has been my whole life. I can't remember a moment in my life where soccer hasn't been the main part. I revolve my world around soccer and hopefully in the future it pays off.

If you were stranded on an island, which teammate would you call to help you?
Martinelli: Josh Tagland.
Mahoney: I would call Stefan Mueller to help me because he's my best friend in the whole wide world.

If you didn't play soccer, what would be your next sport?
Martinelli: Baseball.
Mahoney: Track and field. I think I would do well in that sport if I trained for it, and unfortunately for me sometimes, I'm good at running.
