Men's Soccer Edges Manhattan 1-0 in Double Overtime Victory

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Battling through more than 100 minutes of gameplay, Temple men's soccer punched in a double overtime win against Manhattan this afternoon, edging the Jaspers 1-0 at Gaelic Park.

Newcomer Jorge Gomez Sanchez blasted the game-winning goal into the back of the net off a strong cross from senior Jared Martinelli in the 107th minute of play. This is the first career goal for Gomez Sanchez and Martinelli's 20th career assist.

The Owls put heavy pressure on the Jaspers through both regulation halves, outshooting Manhattan 22-7. Leading the Owls in shots was Gomez Sanchez, with 11 total shots and four on goal. Newcomer Hermann Doerner registered three shots with two on target and Belal Mohamed also recorded three shots on goal. Returners Dan White, Martinelli and Brendon Creed rounded out the shot-takers, collectively striking five shots at Jaspers' goalkeeper, R.J Noll.

Owls' goalkeeper Alex Cagle played all 107 minutes of the match and recorded three saves. Cagle's diving save in the 85th minute kept the two teams scoreless until the end of regulation. Today's win marks Cagle's first career win as a Temple Owl.

The Owls now travel to Northeastern University to face the Huskies on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. This will be the first matchup between the two teams, as well as the Huskies' season opener.
