Owl Attack Pushes Volleyball to Sweep of Navy

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple volleyball team picked up its first win of the season, sweeping visiting Navy as part of the Crowne Plaza Philadelphia West Temple Invitational. The Owls cruised to victory with set scores of 25-16, 25-14, and 25-10, moving to 1-1 on the season.
Temple hit an eye-popping .412 as a team, led by juniors Kirsten Overton and Tyler Davis, and sophomore Irem Asci, who all notched 10 or more kills, while hitting over .400. Overton led the charge with 10 kills and only one error to hit .750. Davis hit at a .556 clip with 11 kills, while Asci lit up the scoreboard with 13 kills and a .407 hitting percentage. Senior Sandra Sydlik paced the attack, dishing out 39 assists, while recording seven digs. Defensively, senior Alyssa Drachslin topped the team with 22 digs.
The Owls jumped out to a 6-2 advantage in the first set, but Navy battled back to make it a two-point set at 13-11. From that point on, Temple's offense clicked, as the Owls closed the match on a 12-5 run to win the set, 25-16. Asci led the Owl attack with seven kills, while Davis had five kills on just eight swings, without recording an error.
Set two followed a similar script, staying close through the early part, before the Owls pulled away. Temple hit .367 in the stanza, while holding the Mids to just a .071 attack. Extended serving runs from Asci and Sydlik blew open the match for the Owls, as Temple grabbed on to an 18-10 lead. Navy would get no closer, as the Owls closed out the 25-14 set on an Asci ace.
The third set was all Temple, as the Owls pounded out 18 kills with just one error to hit .548. Temple held an early 9-3 lead, and the six-point margin proved to be the smallest of the set for Navy. The Owls cruised down the stretch, earning the 25-10 set win on an Izzy Rapacz kill.
Temple held Navy's offense in check, keeping the visitors to just a .062 attack. The Mids had only one player with six or more kills as Dorothy Murray had six kills, while hitting a team-best .235.
The Owls return to action at 7:30 p.m., hosting St. John's in the final match of the tournament.
