Men's Soccer Tops Yale 2-0 for a Third Consecutive Win
9.13.15 | Men's Soccer
Ambler, Pa. – Temple men's soccer recorded its third consecutive win with a 2-0 victory over the Yale Bulldogs at the Ambler Sports Complex on Sunday afternoon. This win moves the Owls to an unbeaten 4-0-1 record on the season.
Jorge Gomez Sanchez knocked in both goals for the Owls to boost his season goal total to six. The first goal came in the 30th minute as Gomez Sanchez knocked the ball over and behind the Bulldogs' goalkeeper off a clean cross from junior captain Matt Mahoney. Junior Kevin Klett delivered the second assist with a threaded pass to Mahoney that set up the cross and goal. Gomez Sanchez hit the second goal in the 42nd minute after a pass to the top of the box from freshman Jordan Wix-Rauch. Gomez Sanchez was then able to beat three Bulldogs and fire a left-footed shot that took a slight deflection off a Yale defender to find the back of the net.
"[Jorge] just has a knack for scoring goals. He knows when to make the runs," said Coach David MacWilliams. "He is very opportunistic. He has a nose for the goal so anytime the ball comes in the box he becomes very, very dangerous."
The Owls and Bulldogs battled through all 90 minutes, pulling more than 30 fouls between both teams. Temple and Yale shared similar opportunities as well, with the Owls posting 10 shots to the Bulldogs' eight. Goalkeeper Alex Cagle recorded one save from a shot taken by Yale's Theo Miller and earned his third career shutout with the help of the Owls' impressive back line. Owl defenders held strong, blocking many of the Bulldogs' shot attempts to keep Yale out of goal scoring position.
"We just have to make sure we keep bringing it the way we brought it against Penn State," said Coach MacWilliams. "I think we were a very good team today."
The Owls are back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 16 as they take on city rival Villanova on the road. The match is set to begin at 4 p.m as the Owls look to remain undefeated in their 2015 campaign.
